New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to get its first transgender councillor.
Bobby Kinnar, fielded by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was on Wednesday declared winner from Sultanpuri 43 A ward of Sultanpur Majra assembly.
Bobby beat Congress candidate Varuna Dhaka by 6,714 votes.
“I want to dedicate my victory to the people who worked so hard for me. I would like to thank everyone. Now I just have to work for development in my area,” she said after the result was declared.
A known face in Sultanpuri area, Bobby had contested the 2017 MCD elections also, as an Independent candidate, but lost.
She was inspired by the Anna Hazare movement, and has been associated with AAP since the party was formed.
Bobby is currently president of the Delhi unit of ‘Hindu Yuva Samaj Ekta Awam Anti-Terrorism Committee’, having been associated with the organisation for the last 15 years.
In her younger years, Bobby had faced discrimination because of gender identity. As a teenager, she was taken in by transgender community and became a wedding dancer.
Bobby’s journey in social work, and subsequently politics, started thereafter.
Bobby had said in an interview earlier that she wanted people of her society (transgender) to get into politics.
“People of our society are moving away from politics. There are many educated people in our society. I want all such people to come into politics and do social service so that our name also increases in society,” Bobby had told India Today.
She is now on the verge of leading from the front.
