Meet India’s New Chief Economic Adviser Anantha Nageswaran

New Delhi: Dr Venkatraman Anantha Nageswaran has been appointed Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) to Government of India. He will succeed KV Subramanian, whose three-year tenure ended in December 2021.

Nageswaran, an academic, is a former executive with Credit Suisse Group AG and Julius Baer Group, reported India Today. His appointment comes at a crucial juncture, when the Indian economy faces fresh challenges caused by the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic after showing signs of recovery last year.

Besides being lead author of the Economic Survey — annual report card of the economy that is tabled in Parliament ahead of the Union budget – Nageswaran will have to share ideas on key policy matters with Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Who Is V Anantha Nageswaran

* Distinguished economist involved mainly in field of academia

* Completed a post-graduate MBA diploma from IIM Ahmedabad in 1985

* Obtained doctoral degree from University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1994 for his work on empirical behaviour of exchange rates

* Had leadership roles in macro-economic and capital market research in several private wealth management institutions in Switzerland and Singapore between 1994 and 2011

* Visiting professor of economics at Krea University

* Worked as part-time member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s economic advisory council between 2019 and 2021

* Co-authored several books, including ‘The Economics of Derivatives’ and ‘The Rise of Finance: Causes, Consequences and Cures’.
