Srinagar: Former Jammu & Kashmir chief minister and Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said on Wednesday said that Kashmir is currently under the worst siege since August 2019.
Expressing solidarity with protesting farmers who are demanding withdrawal of the contentious farm laws, Mufti tweeted: “Concertina wires & trenches around farmer protests have shocked everyone but the sight is far too familiar for us Kashmiris. Kashmir has been under the worst form of siege since August 2019. The scale of suppression here is unimaginable.”
It was on August 5, 2019, that the BJP-headed Central government scrapped Article 370 to bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories.
Mufti, who was released in October 2020 after being kept in detention for over a year, claimed further that political leaders, journalists and businessmen are being hounded to choke dissent.
“The maze of wires, nails & trenches is combined with draconian laws, illegal detentions & massive troop deployment. Central agencies hound political leaders & businessmen, FIRs & UAPA against journalists are methods adopted to choke dissent.”
