Bhubaneswar: The day temperature soared past 40°C in western and northern parts of Odisha on Wednesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD)
Titlagarh recorded the highest maximum temperature of 40.5°C, followed by Balangir at 40.2°C, Sambalpur at 40.1°C , Bhawanipatna at 40°C and Jharsuguda at 39.8°C. The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 37.3°C and 36°C respectively.
The MeT office has forecast further rise in the maximum temperature by 2-3°C during the next 5 days amid thunderstorm activity, which is likely to continue in the state till May 17 with a well-marked low-pressure area over southwest & adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal.

Similar weather conditions with wind speed of 30-40 kmph may also occur in Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Puri, Jagatsinghpur Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati during this period.
May 15: Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) is likely in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Ganjam and Gajapati.
Similar weather conditions with wind speed of 30-40 kmph may also occur in Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Nayagarh, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal & Boudh.
May 16-17: Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (30-40 kmph) is likely in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar.
The national forecaster further informed that conditions are becoming favourable for the advance of southwest monsoon over parts of south Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Andaman & Nicobar Islands around May 16.
