Mercury Drops Below 40°C In Bhubaneswar After 17 Days As Heatwave Ebbs Marginally In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The intensity of heatwave is likely to subside in Odisha amid thunderstorm activity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday.

While heatwave may persist till May 6, the weather agency said that the day temperature is likely to fall by 3 -5°C at many places after 3-4 days as the state is also likely to experience thunderstorm, gusty wind and hailstorm during this period. “Isolated light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning is likely in Odisha from May 2-5 and increase thereafter with scattered to fairly widespread rainfall from May 6-9. Isolated hailstorm is also likely over Odisha today,” the Met office said.

The impact was already felt in Bhubaneswar where the mercury level dropped below 40°C on Thursday after 17 days (April 15 to May 1). The city recorded 39°C this afternoon, according to weather scientist, Regional Meteorological Centre, Umashankar Dash.

The state capital had witnessed the longest spell of maximum temperature of more than 40°C this season in April.

The national forecaster further said that the day temperature will remain in the range of 44-47°C in North Odisha till May 3 and decrease thereafter. “Heatwave conditions may prevail in isolated pockets of Odisha during the next 4 days. Warm night are also likely in the state on May 2-3.”

The IMD had issued orange warning of heatwave condition for the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, Nuapada, and Kalahandi on Thursday (May 2). Yellow warning of heatwave was also sounded for Bargarh, Balasore, and Dhenkanal.

Hot and humid weather condition was also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

There was also a forecast for thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati,Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, and Koraput till 8.30 am on Friday.

Hailstorm may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, Rayagada, and Ganjam during this period, it added.

Yellow warning of heatwave and thunderstorm activity continues for another 3 days. The state may experience light to moderate rain/thundershower in the subsequent two days.
