Bhubaneswar: A day after making it to the top of the country’s heat map and recording the season’s highest of 43.8°C, Bhubaneswar continued to sizzle on Tuesday with mercury soaring to 39.4°C by 11.30 am.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state may continue to reel under heatwave and hot and humid weather conditions till April 27. Thunderstorm with lightning is also expected at some places on April 23-24. “The day temperature is likely to remain 40°C or above at many places in coastal Odisha due to prevailing northwesterly/westerly dry air and high solar insolation,” it said, adding that the maximum temperature may touch 43°C in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.
The state has so far recorded 10 heatwave days in April compared to five during the corresponding period last year.
The weather agency has issued orange warning of severe heatwave for one or two places in Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada districts on April 23. Heatwave condition may also prevail at one or two places in Khurda, Ganjam, Gajapati, Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Nuapada, Cuttack, Jajpur, Balasore, and Bhadrak. There is also warning of hot and humid condition for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
Thunderstorm with lightning may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamal, and Kalahandi till 8.30 am on Wednesday.
There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain/thundershower at one or two places in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamal, and Kalahandi.
The impact of heatwave may slightly lessen during the next two days.
APRIL 24
Yellow Warning
Heatwave condition may prevail at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Khurda, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, and Nuapada.
Hot and humid weather condition is also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
Thunderstorm with lightning along with light to moderate rain may also occur at one or two places in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Nayagarh.
APRIL 25
Yellow Warning
Heatwave condition may prevail at one or two places in Balasore, Khurda, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, and Nuapada.
Hot and humid weather condition is also at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
Amid the prevailing dry weather conditions, the weather agency has again issued orange warning for the subsequent two days.
APRIL 26
Orange Warning
Heatwave may prevail at a few places in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, and Khurda.
Yellow Warning
Hot and humid weather condition is also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
APRIL 27
Orange Warning
Heatwave may prevail at a few places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, and Khurda.
Yellow Warning
Hot and humid weather condition is also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
On Monday, around 17 places recorded 40°C or more. Bhubaneswar joined Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa to become the hottest in the country with both recording 43.8°C each. The maximum temperature in Cuttack was 40.2°C.

Till date, 89 people have been affected by heat-related illnesses in 16 districts of the state with Sundargarh recording the highest 41 cases followed by Khurda (12), Angul (9), Mayurbhanj and Jharsuguda at seven each and Sambalpur (5), according to the Health department.
