Bhubaneswar: With a cold wave sweeping Odisha, the mercury plummeted to 4.4°C at G Udayagiri in Kandhamal on Sunday morning.
Semiliguda in Koraput was close second at 6.1°C followed by Rourkela at 7.2°C.
The Steel City has seen a drop of 7.3°C in night temperature since December 1. The city had recorded 14.5°C on December 1, 13.4°C on December 2, 12.2°C on December 3, 12°C on December 4 and 8.1°C on December 6.
Daringbadi and Jharsuguda are the other two places where mercury hovered around 7°C this morning. The hill station in Kandhamal recorded 7.5°C, followed by the industrial town at 7.6°C.
Similarly, Phulbani also in Kandhamal recorded 8°C, Kirei in Sundargarh (8.8°C), Keo
njhar (9.6°C), Sundargarh (10°C), Koraput (10.3°C) and Bhawanipatna (10.5°C).
The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 11.9°C and 11.8°C respectively.
The other place, where mercury dropped below 15°C, include Dhenkanal (11.4°C), Baripada, Balangir and Boudh at 11.5°C each, Sonepur (11.8°C), Sambalpur (12°C), Titilagarh and Rayagada at 13°C each, Hirakud (13.2°C), Bhadrak (13.5°C), Balasore (13.6°C), and Chandbali, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, and Deogarh at 14°C each, Jajpur (14.4°C)
The sharpest drop of 6°C from normal was recorded in Jharsuguda, followed by 5.2°C in Angul and 4°C in Bhubaneswar.
According to the India Meteorological Department, cold wave conditions prevailed in Jharsuguda and Angul in the last 24 hours. Dense fog also occurred at one or two places in the districts of Kandhamal, Koraput and Sundargarh and moderate fog in Kalahandi.
Cold wave conditions may continue in isolated pockets in Angul, Jharsuguda, Khurda and Jagatsinghpur districts till December 9 morning with dense fog in Sundargarh, Kandhamal and Koraput. Shallow to moderate fog may also occur at one or two places in Sundargarh, Kandhamal, Koraput, Kalahandi, Sonepur, Angul, and Balangir during this period. The minimum temperature across the state may remain unchanged during the next 7 days, it added.
