Bhubaneswar: The mercury soared past 40 degree Celsius at 14 places in Odisha on Sunday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Jharsuguda was the hottest at 43.8°C followed by Balangir (42.2), Titlagarh (42), Sundargarh (41.8), Talcher (41.6), Sonepur (41.4), Sambalpur (41.3), Angul and Hirakud (41.1), Bhawanipatna, Rourkela and Malkangiri (41), Boudh (40.8) and Bargarh (40.2). The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 39.4°C and 38.5°C respectively.
Notably, the IMD has forecast 3-5°C rise in day temperature in next 2 days and issued heatwave warning for eight districts of Odisha – Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Boudh, Angul, Deograh and Balangir, for 3 days from Monday.
The day temperature may soar to 45°C at 9 places – Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Rourkela, Angul, Boudh, Titlagarh, Balangir and Sonepur – in the state on May 16 with the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recording 40°C, the forecast further said.
The heatwave conditions returned as the cyclonic movement dragged along all the moisture with it and with the flow of north-westerly wind towards the state, according to wether experts.
