Bhubaneswar: The mercury soared past 40 degree Celsius at six places in Odisha by 2.30 pm on Tuesday with Jharsuguda recording the highest maximum temperature of 42.6 degree Celsius.
Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur were second at 42. 2 degree Celsius followed by Keonjhar and Hirakud at 41 degree Celsius and Chandbali at 40.8 degree Celsius.
Notably, the state capital was hottest at 40.4 degree Celsius by 11.30 am followed by Jharsuguda (40.2), Keonjhar (39.2), Sambalpur (38.6), Hirakud (37.4), Chandbali (37) and Balasore (36.4).
Bhubaneswar had recorded 32.6 degree Celsius by 8.30 am.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), hot and humid weather conditions are likely to prevail in the state during the next 2 to 3 days. Heatwave warning has been issued for some districts in north and western Odisha till Thursday morning. While heatwave is likely to abate thereafter, thunderstorm in several districts from April 20 may trigger a gradual fall in the day temperature by 2-3 degrees, bringing relief from the scorching heat, it added.

On Monday, 21 places witnessed day temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. Baripada recorded the highest day temperature of 44.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Boudh (43.5), Nuapada (43.5), Jharsuguda (43.4), Talcher (43.2), Sambalpur (43.2), Titilagarh (43.1), Angul (43.1), Balangir (43.0), Sundargarh (42.8), Bhawanipatna (42.6), Rourkela (42.2), Sonepur (41.7), Hirakud (41.6), Cuttack (41.6), Dhenkanal (41.4), Paralakhemundi (41.1), Bargarh (40.8), Nayagarh (40.5), Keonjhar (40.4) and Chandbali (40.2).
