Noida: The Sector 50 metro station in Noida, to be dedicated to the transgender community, will be named the ‘Rainbow Station’.
The decision was taken by the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) on the basis of suggestions from individuals and NGOs.
“The NMRC has received a number of suggestions from individuals and NGOs regarding a suitable name for the station which would correctly signify and represent the essence of the community. Keeping these suggestions in mind, the NMRC has decided to name the station as Rainbow station,” NMRC Managing Director Ritu Maheshwari was quoted as saying by PTI.
As per the 2011 census figures, there are 4.9 lakh transgenders in India out of which 30,000 to 35,000 stay in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).
On June 19, the NMRC announced that it would convert the Sector 50 station into a ‘She-Man’ station with an aim to “empower” the transgender community.
Maheshwari said that NMRC will also provide transgenders with employment opportunities to help them become self-reliant and ensure their inclusion and participation in the society.
