Mexico City: Mexicans erupted with joy after their team pulled a surprise win over Germany during a group match of FIFA World Cup on Sunday. Their jumps were so hard and enthusiastic that they shook the ground, leading to a mini earthquake in Mexico City.

The Institute of Geological and Atmospheric Investigation said highly sensitive earthquake sensors registered tremors at two sites in the capital seven seconds after the game’s 35th minute. It called them an ‘artificial’ earthquake.

Waving Mexican flags, donned in traditional ‘sombrero’ hats, elated fans sang country’s unofficial soccer anthem ‘Cielito Lindo’ or ‘Pretty Little Sky’, at the iconic Angel of Independence monument in downtown Mexico city. Families in Mexican football jerseys, gathered at the city’s massive main square and watched the match on a giant screen.

When star player Hirving Lozano scored a goal against Germany in the 35th minute, supporters cried in joy, “Yes, we did it!”

At the Angel of Independence monument after the match, a citizen was seen chanting ‘Mexico! Mexico!’, while many others were unbelievably happy.

President front-runner Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador congratulated the team and said, “Just like the team won today, Mexico will keep winning.”

Fans also celebrated goalkeeper Guillrmo Ochoa’s performance, circulating memes that depict him as president of Mexico, on social media. Some also riffed on US President Donald Trump’s pledge to build a border wall between the United States and Mexico, with photos that had Ochoa guarding the goal and caption read, “We already have a wall!”
