Jamui: An alleged incident of harassment has surfaced from Bihar’s Jamui, through a video that has gone viral on social media, showing a young girl and a boy who appear to be confronted and harassed by a group of people at night.
Taking cognisance of the matter, Bihar Police responded to the video on X. The incident was later confirmed by the Jamui police, who also confirmed that the boy and the girl seen in the video were both minors who had gone to take pictures at the site.
The disturbing visuals have prompted calls for police action against whoever is responsible for the incident. The footage, as seen on social media, shows a group of people surrounding the teens at an undisclosed location in Jamui. The video appears to have been shot at night.
The girl can be seen being confronted by several men, while the boy accompanying her appears to be separated from her during the confrontation. At one point, a person whose face is covered appears to move towards the girl and lifts her up, grabbing her from below. The girl can be heard screaming and appears to resist. The boy also attempts to intervene as the situation escalates.
The two eventually appear to get away from the group. Another video appears to show the same teens, only this time the location is different, and they are on a scooter. The same group appears to confront them again, after which an argument ensues.
The teens are later seen apparently pleading with the men before leaving the spot. Several social media users have called for police action, and the footage has sparked strong reactions online. Users have described the incident as harassment and alleged moral policing.
Several social media users have urged the police to identify the people seen in the videos and investigate what happened. Some posts have also tagged the Bihar Police and the Jamui Police while seeking action against those allegedly involved.
Bihar Police responded to the circulation of the footage on X
In a reply tagging Jamui Police, the Bihar Police account wrote, “@JamuiPolice Please forward for information and necessary action.” The response confirms that the footage has been brought to the attention of the state police authorities. Jamui SP Vishwajeet Dayal said that the video in which two minor students were being misbehaved with came to their notice on Monday. “Based on the video, we identified the victims and recorded their statements. It came to light that the incident took place around 7 pm on September 19. The two friends, a boy and a girl, had gone for coaching and had gone to the area where the incident occurred to take photographs. The incident happened in the Jamui police station area,” the officer told PTI.
The SP said that the accused have been identified and legal action will be taken soon. “The accused will be arrested soon. No formal complaint had been given by the victims yesterday. Today, when we approached them, they submitted an application, based on which we registered an FIR. Six to seven people are seen in the frame. No one has been named in the FIR; we identified the accused through the investigation, and action will be taken soon,” he added.
Rahul Gandhi condemns the act
On Monday, Rahul Gandhi condemned the incident and said that all the accused should be prosecuted under the POCSO Act.
