Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police has initiated a probe into the alleged gang rape of a minor girl by eight policemen in the city.
The probe started after Mahila Police registered a case on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother.
Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash told the media that the mother of the victim had lodged a complaint with the Mahila Police station on August 30 alleging that her minor daughter was repeatedly gang-raped in March and April this year. She has also alleged that two staffers of an electronic media, two security personnel, a police officer and his two associates have raped her daughter.
Stating that he has taken up the matter seriously, he said that a special team has been formed to identify the accused.
The case is being investigated by the IIC of Mahila Police Station.
Mahila Police on Friday conducted the victim’s medical examination and also recorded her statement under Section 161 of the CrPC. Later, her statement was recorded in the presence of the local magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC.
According to the complaint, the incident took place in the Infocity police station area two months ago.
Finding the victim alone, the accused took her to a secluded place and raped her. Later, they threatened to kill her if she spoke about the incident to anyone, he added.
Initially, the girl remained morose and did not reveal the incident to her parents. Later, she narrated her ordeal to them.
Following this, her mother took her to Infocity Police Station on August 30 to lodge a complaint. However, Infocity Police told the mother that it was a sensitive case and advised her to lodge a complaint at Mahila Police Station.
