Bhubaneswar: A 12-year-old was crushed to death under the wheels of a Mo Bus in Raghunathpur area of Bhubaneswar on Tuesday morning, triggering tension in the locality.
As per preliminary information, the mishap took place at around 9 am when the girl was riding cycle along the Raghunathpur road. She died on the spot after being hit and run over by the bus.
Following the incident, angry villagers blocked the busy Nandankanan-Jaydev Vihar road, bringing vehicular movement to a complete halt on the route, and also detained three Mo Buses. They also burnt tyres on the road and protested seeking adequate compensation for bereaved family and arrest of the driver.
Soon Nandankanan police team that reached the spot and informed the agitators that the driver had surrendered himself following the accident.
While admitting that driver was at fault, Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) that manages the Mo Bus service in the capital region announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for the family of the deceased. “We will soon install the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) in the Mo Bus fleet. This will alert drivers when the bus gets close to any other vehicle. It will be implemented on a priority basis,” an official said.
