Nabarangpur: A minor girl was allegedly tortured in public by villagers for stealing from a house in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district. The matter came to light on Saturday after a video on the incident went viral in social media.
According to sources, the girl belonging to Tarangapuri village under Kundei police limits of the district had gone to the forest nearby to collect Mahua flowers on Friday afternoon. Some youths of Tarangapuri dragged her from the forest to the centre of the village.
The youths accused her of stealing Rs 900 and some slippers from the house of Bhagirathi Gond, a villager, and tied her to a pole. They also reportedly beat her up and put a garland of used shoes on her. They abused her in filthy language and humiliated the minor girl.
Following the incident, the girl’s parents filed a complaint at Kundei police station. On the basis of the complaint, the police registered a case and arrested four villagers. The villagers are identified as Bhagi Gond, Janak Gond, Jal Gond and Aganu Gond in connection with the case.
The IIC of Kundei police station, Prashant Kumar Sethi said a case had been registered and the arrested persons would be forwarded to the court on Saturday.
