Malkangiri: A minor girl had a suffocating time for several hours as she fell into a hole dug up to erect electric pole in Odisha’s Malkangiri district on Monday.
According to sources, the incident took place when the 8-year-old girl, identified as Mamata Gouda, was playing with her friends on a road in Indira Colony of Mathili block headquarters in the district in the morning. She accidentally fell into the narrow hole on the roadside.
The narrow hole of around 1 foot diametre and 6 feet deep had been dug up to erect electric pole. But it had been left uncovered.
As Mamata went to the bottom of the hole after falling into it, she got stuck there and could not come out. Her friends tried to pull her out but failed. Then they informed their parents who along with the locals tried to rescue. As they also did not succeed, they informed the Fire Brigade.
The Fire personnel had to work for several hours keeping the safety of Mamata in mind. They dug out sideways to broaden its width and finally managed to rescue the minor girl.
They rushed Mamata, who had sustained injuries at several places, to the hospital at Mathili. Her condition was stated to be stable.
