Minor ‘Rape’ Survivor Hospitalised In Bhubaneswar, House Owner Arrested

Bhubaneswar: A member of Odisha State Commission for Women on Friday met a victim of alleged sexual assault, who was admitted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar in serious condition the previous day.

Police have also launched an investigation and arrested the accused house owner, who allegedly committed the crime when family members of the 11-year-old girl were not at home. Medical and forensic examinations are being conducted to verify the allegations, sources said.

“The survivor’s condition is now stable. I spoke to t

he mother. The assault took place inside the house when her parents were away. Strict action will be taken against the accused, and we will ensure that the girl gets justice,” said Urmila Mohapatra, a member of Odisha State Commission for Women.

She informed that statements of the girl and her family members have been recorded as part of the ongoing investigation. “I will visit the Mahila Police Station and will discuss the matter with the inspector-in-charge. The accused has been arrested promptly,” she added.

Sources further stated that the accused, a shopkeeper in the locality, had allegedly attempted to rape the girl, whose parents hail from Ganjam district, on December 4. He, however, fled the spot as the girl raised an alarm. However, on Wednesday, the accused found the girl alone at home as her parents had gone outside and allegedly raped her. He also threatened her not to disclose the matter to anyone.
