Bhubaneswar: Taking advantage of the absence of a family at the residence, unidentified miscreants allegedly looted gold ornaments worth over Rs 25 lakh and cash from a house at Bairagi Nagar, Laxmi Sagar, in Odisha capital late on Saturday.
According to sources, the miscreants entered from the balcony door at the backyards of the building. The incident took place between 2 am and 3 am.
The house owner, identified as Jitendra Jena, was away in Gujarat for a vacation with his wife for the last one week. His elder brother, Harichandra Jena, who stays on the ground floor with his family, checked the house after being alerted by neighbours, but the miscreants had decamped with the booty by then.
He lodged a complaint in this regard at the Laxmi Sagar police station this morning.
“We got a call from our neighbour around 3 am. They had heard some noises from the first floor. When we checked, we found the balcony door open. The thieves had looted Rs 50,000 in cash and gold and silver ornaments of around Rs 25 lakh from the house,” said Harishchandra’s wife.
Police, which entered the house by breaking open the main door, found that the entire house was vandalised. The footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the locality is being examined.
