‘From Streets Of Kolkata To Cinematic Heights’: Mithun Chakraborty To Be Honoured With Dadasaheb Phalke Award

New Delhi: Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty will be conferred with Dadasaheb Phalke award for his contribution to Indian cinema, Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed through a tweet on Monday.

The award will presented to the actor at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8.

“From the streets of Kolkata to Cinematic Heights; Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor Mithun Chakraborty for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema. To be presented at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8,” he posted on X.

This has come months after the actor was honoured with the Padma Bhushan. He had received the honour from President Droupadi Murmu in April.

 Mithun had made his acting debut with Mrinal Sen’s art-house film Mrigayaa (1976), which also won him his first National Film Award for Best Actor. That same year, he played a brief role in Dulal Guha’s hit thriller Do Anjaane which had Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha and Prem Chopra in the lead.

He has appeared in over 350 films, including Hindi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Odia, Kannada, Telugu, and Punjabi movies. He impacted Hindi cinema in the 1980s with over 110 releases. He played Jimmy in the iconic 1982 film Disco Dancer, which was the first film in India to gross Rs 100 crore. His notable works in the 90s include Agneepath (1990), which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor, as well as hits like Shandar (1990) and Trinetra (1991).

He also won two National Film Awards for his role in Tahader Katha (1992) and Vivekananda (1998).

In recent years, he appeared in films such as OMG: Oh My God (2012) and  The Kashmir Files (2022). He made his OTT debut with web series, Bestseller (2022).

Mithun is the recipient of three National Film Awards, two Filmfare Awards, one Screen Award and three BFJA Awards for his acting performance.

He also features in Limca World Record for the most film releases in a single year.
