Jagatsinghpur: The relation between Tirtol MLA Bijaya Shankar Das and his girlfriend Somalika Das took a new turn on Friday as the former did not turn up for registration of their marriage just a month after both had applied for it.

According to sources, the registration of their marriage at sub-registrar office in Jagatsinghpur was scheduled on Friday. As per the schedule, Somalika arrived at the office in time, but neither the MLA nor any of his family members turned up. Somalika had to leave the office after waiting for nearly three hours.

Speaking to the media persons before her departure, Somalika said though both of them had applied for registration of their marriage at sub-registrar office on May 17, Bijay did not turn up in the court on the date scheduled today.

“I do not know what has transpired within this month. Bijay is not answering my phone calls. I think he has gone back on his words or has developed relationship with another woman,” she said.

Alleging that the MLA’s brother and other family members were threatening her, Somalika said she will file a case against him in the police station.

On the other hand, the MLA said he had not received any court notice to appear for marriage registration on the day. “As per process, the registration process needs to be completed within 90 days of application. The candidates are subsequently eligible for marriage within 60 days. I have not received any summon or nobody has informed me regarding the marriage registration for today,” a local TV channel quoted him as saying.

It may be noted that Bijay, the son of senior BJD leader and former minister late Bishnu Das, was in relationship with Somalika for a long time. But, differences had cropped up between the two and Bijay expressed his reluctance to get married to Somalika last month.

Following this, Somalika released some of their intimate pictures on the social media. As a result, there was pressure from different quarters on Bijay to patch up with Somalika.

With the mediation of their lawyers, both agreed to get married legally. Accompanied by their lawyers, they had applied for marriage at the sub-registrar office in presence of witnesses.
