Moderna has dropped a hint on the price of its COVID-19 vaccine, which they claim is 94.5% effective based on data from the final phase of clinical trials.
Depending on the volume of order, the vaccine will cost governments between $25 (Rs 1850) and $37 (Rs 2740) per dose, the company’s Chief Executive Stephane Bancel said.
“Our vaccine, therefore, costs about the same as a flu shot, which is between $10 and $50,” German weekly Welt am Sonntag quoted him as saying.
“Nothing is signed yet, but we’re close to a deal with the European Union Commission. We want to deliver to Europe and are in constructive talks,” Bancel said, adding it was just a “matter of days” before a contract is ready.
Moderna will submit its COVID-19 vaccine candidate for an Emergency Use Authorization with the United States’ Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in the next few weeks.
The Pfizer vaccine candidate, which has been found to be 95% effective in preventing mild to severe COVID-19 disease in the third phase trials, has already asked US regulators to allow emergency use of its vaccine.
