New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his tributes to Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away at the age of 96 after reigning for 70 years.
“I had memorable meetings with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during my UK visits in 2015 and 2018. I will never forget her warmth and kindness,” Modi tweeted.
“During one of the meetings she showed me the handkerchief Mahatma Gandhi gifted her on her wedding. I will always cherish that gesture,” he tweeted.
Mahatma Gandhi sent the handkerchief as a gift for Queen Elizabeth’s wedding with Prince Philip in 1947.
The Mahatma personally spun the yarn and Lord Louis Mounbatten carried it to England, according to reports. Lord Mountbatten had suggested the gift, according to his daughter Pamela Hicks.
