New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday had a telephone conversation with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, during which the two leaders discussed the ongoing situation in Ukraine. Modi asserted that “there can be no military solution” to the issue and conveyed India’s readiness to contribute to “any peace efforts”.
Modi also raised concerns over the safety of nuclear installations in Ukraine. Reiterating his call for early cessation of hostilities, the PM underlined the need to pursue the path of dialogue and diplomacy.
“PM Modi emphasised the importance India attaches to the safety and security of nuclear installations, including in Ukraine. He underlined that endangerment of nuclear facilities could have far-reaching and catastrophic consequences for public health and the environment,” a statement by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated.
Zelensky reiterated the importance of respecting the UN Charter, International Law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.
“The President noted that all the aggressor’s decisions aimed at attempting illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories are null and void and do not change the reality,” the Ukraine government statement said.
The two leaders spoke nearly two weeks after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a partial mobilisation.
