Modi To Meet India’s Paris Contingent On I-Day; Will Neeraj Chopra Miss Date With PM?

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet India’s Paris Olympics contingent on Independence Day.

While some of the 117-member contingent have already returned to India, the majority will leave Paris by Tuesday.

Vinesh Phogat, who has still not heard from Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on her appeal for shared silver medal in Women’s 50kg Freestyle category, was seen leaving the Games Village on Monday evening.

However, India’s lone silver-medallist Neeraj Chopra will reportedly travel to Germany for medical advice on his groin injury and a possible hernia operation.

Thus, he could miss the meeting with Modi, which is likely to happen around 1 pm after the Independence Day function, India Today reported.

The PM spoke to the medal winners over phone soon after their respective triumphs in Paris.

He also expressed his support for wrestler Vinesh after she was disqualified from her final bout for weighing in 100 grams more than the permissible limit that morning.

India won 6 medals in Paris, without a gold.

Even if CAS rules in favour of Vinesh on Tuesday and awards her a silver, India would have failed to match their Tokyo record three years ago, when they bagged 7 medals which included a gold, silver and 5 bronze.

Ten medals was the target for the biggest-ever Indian contingent at an Olympic Games, but the Indians fell short, with a number of fourth-placed finishes.

INDIA’S PARIS OLYMPICS MEDALLISTS

Manu Bhaker – Bronze (Shooting, Women’s 10m Air Pistol)

Manu Bhaker & Sarabjot Singh – Bronze (Shooting, 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team)

Swapnil Kusale – Bronze (Shooting, Men’s 50m Rifle 3 Position)

Indian team – Bronze (Men’s Hockey)

Neeraj Chopra – Silver (Athletics, Men’s Javelin)

Aman Sehrawat – Bronze (Wrestling, Men’s 57kg Freestyle).
