The G20 Extraordinary Leaders’ Summit on Afghanistan will see global leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, take stock of the situation in Taliban-controlled nation on October 12.
According to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) statement said on Monday, the agenda of the virtual meeting includes response to humanitarian needs and access to basic services and livelihood in the war-torn nation which was taken over by Taliban in August as US troops withdrew in batches.
The leaders will also engage in talks on security and fight against terrorism, mobility, migration and human rights.
Ever since Taliban took charge, concerns over human rights, especially that of women and minorities, have been growing globally.
Some of the European nations have expressed apprehensions over a possible massive inflow of migrants.
Many leaders like Modi feel that an international strategy is needed to ensure that Afghanistan doesn’t become a haven for militants.
“The meeting is an important platform to help build international consensus and facilitate a coordinated approach between multilateral organisations, including the UN and its agencies, and global and regional actors to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan,” MEA stated.
Modi had earlier participated in Shanghai Cooperation Organisation- Collective Security Treaty Organization (SCO – CSTO) outreach summit on Afghanistan, while External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had taken part in the meeting of G20 Foreign Ministers on Afghanistan.
