Mom And Son Unite After 35 Years During Flood Relief Operations

New Delhi: This incident seems to be straight out of a Bollywood film but dramatic as it may sound, it is real. It could, in fact, be a perfect plot for a movie.

During the recent flood rescue operations in Patiala, a volunteer, Jagjit Singh, working for an NGO, Bhai Chanayia Ji, came to face to face with his mother, Harjit Kaur, from whom he was separated more than 30 years ago. was no stranger to lost-and-found tales. But a mission last week turned the tide his way and set him up for the reunion of a lifetime – with his mother.

The reunion took place at his maternal grandparents’ home in a Patiala village on July 20. He recorded the meeting on Facebook, confessing he may not be able to control his emotions, according to a report in Times of India.

Jagjit was six months old when his father died. Harjit remarried and his paternal grandparents took him away as a two-year-old. As he grew up, he was told his parents had died in an accident. Decades on, his aunt put Jagjit on track for reunion with his mother.

One of his aunts (bua) told him that his maternal grandmother’s house was also in Patiala’s Boharpur village. Jagiit soon reached Boharpur and met his maternal grandmother, Preetam Kaur. During the course of the conversation, the maternal grandmother told Jagjit that his mother Harjit had a son from her first marriage. That is when Jagjit broke down and revealed his identity.

His mother, Harjit Kaur, not only found her son Jagjit, 37, but also his wife and their 14-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son.

Jagjit came to know his mother was alive only five years ago. “But I had no more information as my grandfather and all my relatives including my taya (uncle) and tayi (aunt), who knew about my parents had passed away,” said Jagjit. His paternal grandparents never revealed anything about his mother.
His paternal grandfather, who raised him, died in 2014 soon after Jagjit cleared matriculation. His grandfather would Jagjit that his parents had died in a car accident.
