Monsoon Arrives On Time In Odisha, Now Brace For Heavy Showers

Bhubaneswar: The southwest monsoon arrived in Odisha on time despite a delayed entry into Kerala.

The monsoon usually takes 10 to 14 days to arrive in Odisha after hitting the Kerala coast. After a delay of few days, the monsoon clouds had reached Kerala on June 3.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said that the southwest monsoon had covered Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Gajpati, Ganjam districts and parts of Bargarh, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda and Puri districts of Odisha.

“Conditions are favorable for further advancement of southwest monsoon into remaining parts of Odisha during the next 48 hours,” it added.

The IMD further said that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the neighbourhood and become more marked during the subsequent 24 hours. This will trigger widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy and isolated extremely heavy in Odisha till June 14.

Also thunderstorm with moderate to severe lightning activity is very likely in some places of north Odisha during next 24 hours. People have been advised to keep watch on the weather and accordingly move to safer places to protect themselves from lightning strikes.
