Monsoon Hits Keralam; Orange Alerts For Odisha As Rain, 60 kmph Winds Loom



Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the arrival of southwest monsoon in Keralam on Thursday (June 4), three days later than the normal onset date of June 1.

While heavy rain has been lashing various parts of Keralam since the previous night, the MeT office has forecast isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (50-60 kmph) in Odisha on June 4-5. Orange warning has been issued for Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam and Nayagarh on June 4; and Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj on June 5.

Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) may


also occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Puri and Khurda on June 4. Similar weather conditions may continue to prevails in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam on June 5; Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj on June 6-7; and Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Ganjam on June 8.

There is also a warning of thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (30-40 kmph) for several districts of Odisha, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh from June 5-8.

While there is no warning thereafter, light to moderate rain or thunderstorm may occur at one or two places in all the districts during the subsequent two days. It further noted that there will be no large change in the day temperature during the next 6-7 days.
