Bhubaneswar: The southwest monsoon will be active in Odisha in the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a mid-day bulletin on Thursday.

According to the bulletin, the monsoon will be active in south Odisha in the first phase and subsequently cover the remaining parts of the state.

“A cyclonic circulation at 0.9km above mean sea level over the Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas of Jharkhand and north Odisha has become less marked while a low pressure has formed over the north-east Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall will occur at one or two places in the districts of Puri, Ganjam, Khurda, Jagatsingpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Gajapati and Koraput on Friday, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Khurda, Boudh, Kalahandi and Kandhamal on Saturday and Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Nabarangpur and Koraput on Sunday,” the bulletin said.

A release by the the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of SOA Deemed to be University said that the very severe cyclonic storm ‘Vayu’, which headed towards Gujarat before veering away, had caused the monsoon current to be weak over Kerala and adjoining west coast after its onset over the southern state, as the moisture was dragged away towards the centre of the cyclonic storm.

Vayu has since weakened into a low pressure area, which was over Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday and was likely to move towards east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as a cyclonic circulation on Friday, director of the CEC, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, said.

“The monsoon current showed pulsating characteristics as it did not move continuously and took a pause after advancing some distance. It waited till further surge developed to help it move forward,” he said.
