New Delhi: A study by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, has suggested that more people under 50 years of age lost their lives to COVID-19 infection than any other age group.
AIIMS Delhi Director Dr Randeep Guleria, Chief of the AIIMS trauma centre Dr Rajesh Malthotra and others authored the study in the ‘Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine’.
The study covered the deceased adult patients who were admitted from April 4 to July 24.
A total of 654 adult patients were admitted to the ICU, of which, 247 died during the study period. A fatality of 37.7 per cent was recorded (247 out of 654) and adult patients were further divided into age groups of 18 to 50, 51 to 65 and 65-plus. This was done to compare their clinical characteristics and outcomes.
The study showed that 42.1 per cent were in the 18-50 years age group, 34.8 per cent in 51-65 years and 23.1 per cent were in the 65-plus age group.
