Nayagarh: A notorious criminal was injured in a brief encounter with police at Lenkudipada in Nayagarh district late on Monday night.
The injured has been identified as Suresh Rout of Polabadi village under Daspalla police station limits in the district.
As informed by the IIC of Nayagarh Police Station Rashmi Ranjan Patnaik, a police team during night patrolling found Rout moving suspiciously near Nayagarh Autonomous College at about 12.45 AM. As police tried to apprehend him, Rout, in a bid to escape, opened fire at them and the police retaliated. During the crossfire, a bullet hit Rout’s right leg.
He was admitted to the district headquarters hospital from where he was shifted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Police later seized a mauser from his possession.
Over 30 criminal cases are pending against Rout at different police stations in the district, the IIC said.
