Baripada: Khunta police in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district have arrested four persons, including the mother who allegedly sold her infant girl for Rs 800.
According to sources, Karmi Murmu was allegedly unhappy with the birth of her second daughter and sold the eight-month-old to a couple Phulamani Marandi and Akhil Marandi of Bipracharanpur village through Mahi Murmu of her village for only Rs 800.
Her husband, Musu Murmu, was unaware of this deal as he was away in Tamil Nadu working for a living. On returning home, he inquired about her and got to know from his neighbours about the deal while his wife told him to the infant had died. Heartbroken, he lodged a complaint at Khunta police station.
Besides the mother, police also arrested the mediator and the couple who bought the baby, which was then handed over to the father.
