New Delhi: In a relief to Congress leader Kamal Nath, the Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Election Commission’s order to revoke his star campaigner status for the by-elections in Madhya Pradesh.
“We are staying the Election Commission’s order and the EC has no power,” NDTV quoted Chief Justice of India SA Bobde as saying.
The CJI said, “Who has given power to you (the Election Commission) to remove a candidate from the star campaigner list? Where does EC have the power to determine who will be the leader of a party under Section 77 of Representation of People Act?”
The decision came after the former Chief Minister filed a plea against the EC stripped him of his star campaigner status over several controversial remarks.
