Rourkela: MP Jual Oram has demanded take-over of the airport at Rourkela by Airports Authority of India (AAI) from Rourkela Steel Plant.
Oram raised the demand during a meeting with Union Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia in New Delhi on Thursday. The BJP MP from Sundargarh pointed out that several problems continued to affect smooth operation of the airport.
“Though the special Visual Flight Rules (VFR) has been made operational in Rourkela airport, several issues remain unresolved till now. Since the ownership of the airport still lies with the RSP, its development has not been taken up as per expectation,” the MP said in a memorandum submitted to the Union Minister.
Claiming that the Rourkela airport has huge potential for cargo and human traffic, Oram said its further development can be ensured if the AAI takes up its ownership.
He also demanded 4C licence to the airport, direct flight service to New Delhi and other major cities, installation of Instrument Landing System (ILS), flight operation at night and staff quarters for its employees.
Scindia assured the MP of looking into the demands during the meeting. Several prominent persons from Rourkela accompanied Oram for the meeting.
