New Delhi: Widely-used messaging platform WhatsApp has put multiple accounts, including many in India, under review for up to 24 hours.
Access to all features of the Meta-owned app have been blocked for the impacted accounts.
The action is security-related, according to a spokesperson of the company.
“We are always working to stay ahead of those trying to abuse our service and ban accounts to help keep other users safe. Sometimes we get this wrong and if we do, we try to fix it as quickly as possible to get people back to chatting,” he told PTI.
Many found a message on screens saying: “Account in review. Date requested: 3 Aug 2026. Your account activity and device info is being checked to make sure it follows our terms of service. We will notify you of the results typically within 24 hours.”
Below the notice, options were displayed to learn more about account-related issues, including ‘How to use WhatsApp responsibly. See guidance’ and ‘About stolen phone and accounts.’
Users started reporting the problem on other social media platforms, mainly Elon Musk-owned X, from Monday night.
Several affected users complained that they had not received any proper explanation for why their accounts had been flagged.
“My WhatsApp account has been disabled without any explanation. I have already submitted an appeal, but the review page only displays a generic message stating that it will ‘typically be reviewed within 24 hours.’ Help me urgently,” wrote one user.
