Mumbai: Coldplay has rewritten the record books for the highest attendance in music tour history, surpassing Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
Guinness World Records has acknowledged that the British band’s Music of the Spheres World Tour has sold over a million tickets, cementing its place as the most-attended concert tour ever.
The Eras Tour remains the highest-grossing music tour, having generated a mind-boggling $2.07 billion. However Chris Martin’s British rock band Coldplay has a chance to overtake this record as well their tour ends in September 2025.
Guinness World Records confirmed that Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour has attracted 10.3 million attendees, surpassing Eras Tour’s 10.1 million.
Coldplay has performed 175 shows since 2022, excluding concerts in Abu Dhabi and India, which featured the largest stadium concert of the 21st century. With performances scheduled until September, total attendance is expected to exceed 12 million.
Coldplay’s record-breaking tour received a significant boost from their India concerts recently. The band performed three back-to-back shows at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Sports Stadium on January 18, 19, and 21. They then took the stage at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on January 25 and 26, drawing crowds of over 2.5 lakh in two days.
The cricket ground, which can seat over 100,000 in the stands, hosted the band in a configuration that allowed for a total crowd of nearly 140,000, including fans on the field — something not possible during cricket matches.
In comparison, Justin Bieber and Diljit Dosanjh performed at smaller venues. Bieber’s 2017 concert at DY Patil Stadium attracted around between 60,000 fans, while Diljit’s December 2024 show in Chandigarh drew 50,000 people.
Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi was moved by the craze for Coldplay concerts.
“In the past decade, both the trend and demand for live events have grown. In the last few days, you must have seen the magnificent images from the Coldplay concerts held in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. It is a testimony of the scope of live concerts in India,” Modi remarked recently.
