Mumbai Air Hostess Murder Case: Accused Hangs Self Using His Pants Inside Lockup

New Delhi: In a bizarre turn of events, the accused in the Mumbai air hostess murder case, died by suicide. He hanged himself using his pants while in the lockup at Andheri. The accused was arrested for killing the 23-year-old air hostess by slitting her throat inside her flat in Mumbai’s Marol area.

The deceased, Rupal Ogrey, hailed from Chhattisgarh and came to Mumbai in April for training with Air India. Police arrested 40-year-old Vikram Athwal, Ogrey’s residential society’s garbage collection staffer, less than 12 hours after the body was discovered on Sunday night in her flat at NG Complex on Krishanlal Marwah Marg in Marol.

The woman used to live in the flat along with her sister and the latter’s boyfriend, but the duo left for their native place eight days back. The police have now informed them about the incident, the official said.

Officials said they would be able to understand what transpired a few hours before the murder on the basis of the medical reports. Police are awaiting the permission of the victim’s family to conduct the post-mortem.
