Mumbai: In a heinous incident, a 34-year-old doctor allegedly assaulted a COVID-19 positive male patient in the ICU ward of Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital.
As per reports, the accused doctor has been placed under house quarantine instead of being detained in police custody, to avoid spreading of the infection.
An official of Agripada police station said that the accused has been placed under quarantine in his apartment in Thane, and is being monitored.
Police have registered a case under IPC sections 377 (unnatural offences), 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of diseases endangering life) and 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of diseases endangering life), following a complaint from the hospital’s HR head.
The accused doctor has been sacked by the hospital, reported the Indian Express.
The hospital said in a statement: “The doctor was on his first day of duty, having joined the previous day. Following the receipt of information of misconduct and as per protocol, the administration immediately informed the police. The services of the doctor were terminated.”
As per the report, the incident occurred on May 1, at around 9.30 am. The accused had joined the hospital on April 30.
