Dhenkanal: A businessman, who happened to be the prime accused in a murder case, was allegedly shot dead by unidentified miscreants in Kamakhyanagar area of Odisha’s Dhenkanal district on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Nirakar Sahu, a resident of Kantioput sahi in Tumusinga. Preliminary investigation revealed that he was dealing in minor minerals.

Police recovered his body near Malabandha railway overbridge in Alatuma village under the jurisdiction of Kamakhyanagar police limits. Apart from the bullet injury on his body, his neck was severely wounded, sources said.

According to reports, Nirakar was the prime accused in the murder of Baruan samiti member Deepak Mohanty in 2021. After being released from jail on bail four months ago, he had restarted his business.

While the exact reason behind the death is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that business rivalry and past enmity could have led to the murder.

Family members have alleged that Nirakar was killed by some people, who were harbouring grudge against him due to his alleged involvement in the Mohanty murder case.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
