Bhopal: A 30-year-old Muslim woman was assaulted by her brother-in-law for allegedly voting in favour of BJP in the recent Assembly elections.
The incident took place in Ahmedpur area of Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore on December 4, 2023, when she was celebrating BJP’s landslide victory (163 out of 230 seats) in the state to retain power.
Her family was not amused.
Samina B, the victim, filed a complaint which stated that her brother-in-law Javed Khan objected to her celebrations and started abusing her. And when Samina protested, Javed thrashed her with a stick.
She sustained injuries to her hands and other parts of the body, Samina claimed.
Javed also allegedly threatened Samina with dire consequences if she continued to support the BJP.
Police in Sehore registered a case under IPC Sections 294 (usage of obscene words in public), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt to any person), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of the common intention).
“We received a complaint from a woman that her brother-in-law had beaten her. We have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the accused will be nabbed at the earliest,” India Today quoted a police official as saying.
Samina met District Magistrate Praveen Singh Adhayach on December 8, and demanded action against her brother-in-law.
“He (Javed Khan) was angry as I voted for the BJP. I received several injuries after being beaten by him. Today, DM promised to conduct an inquiry and take action in the case,” Samina told newspersons after the meeting with the DM.
