Bhadrak: Muharram was observed peacefully with Muslims by taking out Tazia processions in Odisha’s Bhadrak on Saturday.
As per reports, total 41 Tazia processions were taken out from different parts of the town on the day. Seven groups of Muslims came out in procession from Nangamahala, Santhia, Kacheri Chhak, Nua Bazaar and went around the town.
Similarly, 34 Tazias were taken in procession from Puruna Bazaar. All the processions will culminate in Medina Maidan.
In order to maintain law and order during the processions, the district administration deployed 17 platoons of police force including 80 officers under the supervision of 2 additional SPs. The police kept a watch on the processions from drone cameras and CCTVs installed at strategic and sensitive places in the town.
The police also conducted flag march throughout the town for two days before the festival. However, no untoward incident was reported from any part of Bhadrak during the day.
It may be noted that the town witnessed communal violence during Ramnavami celebration in April, 2017. There was arson and riot that was triggered after Muslim youths allegedly posted vulgar remarks on Ramnavami.
In 1991, violence broke out in Bhadrak during Ramnavami when some members of a procession with a Muslim man passing by.
