Jagatsinghpur: The founder of a mutt was allegedly hacked to death by a youth in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district on Friday.
According to sources, the incident took place on the premises of Adimata mutt at Kosida Baragudipada village under Balikuda block of the district. While its founder Baba Prahllad Das was having lunch in the mutt in afternoon, Bana Das of Kela Sahi in the village went there in an inebriated condition.
Bana attacked Baba with a sharp weapon leading to his death on the spot. While Naba was trying to run away after committing the crime, the locals nabbed him after a chase in Ordang village. Later, they handed him over to police.
The incident sparked tension in the area as the villagers launched a protest by putting up a blockade on the main road with burning tyres. As the communication on the road was affected, Jagatsinghpur ADPO and additional tehsildar of Balikuda accompanied by police force went to the spot.
The road blockade was withdrawn after the officials assured the agitating villagers of financial aid to Baba’s family after consultation with the district collector. They also granted Rs 10,000 from the Red Cross fund.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem. A scientific team also went the murder spot and started investigation.
