Sambalpur: In what could go down as a lesson in posterity, a 21-year-old bride showed her groom and his family the door even after the arrival of the baarat. Everything was going well till the groom and his relatives settled down to feasting and downed a few drinks around midnight by which time most of the guests were done with their dinner.
The groom, a banker, his father and his brother got furious because there was not enough mutton for them. All the items were there for the feast. But because of the shortage of mutton, they became furious. They argued with the bride’s family members and insulted them. No amount of cajoling by the bride’s family helped and the groom’s side kept hurling insults till the bride took charge of the situation.
Hurt by the disregard shown to her family, she asked the groom’s side to leave and refused to go ahead with the wedding saying she cannot compromise with her own and her family’s self-respect. She said she would rather concentrate on her career than marry a man who cannot respect her. The girl is a post-graduate in science.
In a similar case on June 9, Devaki Digal in the tribal-dominated Kandhamal district walked out of her marriage when her husband and in-laws started making demands for dowry. She went back to her parents’s house. Days later, her husband came to pacify her saying that he repents his mistake wants to lead a peaceful life with her.
