Bargarh: An undertrial prisoner (UTP) died under mysterious circumstances in a jail in Odisha’s Bargarh district on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old UTP, Manoj Paika of Prakashpur village under Paikamal block of the district, was arrested for selling illicit liquor and forwarded to court on October 6. After the court rejected his bail application, Manoj was sent to district jail of Bargarh.
Manoj was scheduled to appear before the district sessions court in Bargarh in connection with his case. But he suddenly fell sick and his date for appearance in the court was rescheduled.
The jail authorities admitted him in the old community health centre (CHC) in the town. But Manoj succumbed in the hospital. On being informed, police went to the CHC and sent his body for post-mortem.
Jailor of Bargarh District Jail Salman Kujjur said Manoj was suspected to have died due to cardiac arrest. But exact cause of his death would be known after getting the post-mortem report, he added.
