Baripada: The children of an Anganwadi centre had a narrow escape as a huge chunk of cement plaster fell from the roof of a room in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Saturday.
According to sources, the incident took place in the Anganwadi centre at Jamabani village under Rairangpur block of the district.
While the children were playing in a room of the Anganwadi centre, a huge chunk of the cement plaster fell from the roof. However, nobody was injured as the debris fell on a vacant place. The staff of the centre were also present at the time.
The centre’s staff and villagers said the building housing the Anganwadi centre was 30 years old and in a dilapidated condition. The plaster has peeled off from the walls and roofs of other rooms also. The water leaking from the roof during rainy season is a normal affair, they claimed.
They alleged that though they had drawn the attention of higher authorities about poor condition of the building, posing serious threat to the children, no remedial step has been taken till date.
