National Herald Case: Rahul Gandhi Wants ED Questioning Deferred; Know Why

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi has already been interrogated by Enforcement Directorate (ED) for around 30 hours over three days.

The Congress leader on Thursday wrote to the ED requesting that his questioning, in an alleged money-laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper, be deferred to Monday.

The Congress MP, who was allowed a break on Thursday, has been summoned again on Friday.

Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s mother Sonia is unwell, and the brother and sister have been spending as much time as possible with her in in Delhi’s Ganga Ram hospital.

Sonia was hospitalized on June 12 over COVID-related complications.

The 75-year-old Congress president, who had tested COVID positive on June 2, has also been summoned for questioning.

The ED is investigating the Gandhi family’s role in the Young Indian’s takeover of Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the company that runs National Herald, known to be the Congress’ mouthpiece.

According to Income Tax department, 800 crore worth of assets of AJL that the Young Indian took over should be considered an asset of the latter’s shareholders Sonia and Rahul, for which they should pay tax.

Congress has claimed that since the Young Indian is a non-profit entity, shareholders can’t make money from its assets.

Congress leaders and party workers have been staging demonstrations in several states since ED’s interrogation of Rahul started on Monday.
