Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: Odisha’s film industry saw the end of an era with the demise of veteran actor Bijay Mohanty on Monday (July 20).
The actor had graduated from National School of Drama (NSD) in 1973 and thereafter made a foray into Odia films in 1977 with Nagaphasa and Chilika Tire.
Mourning his death, the NSD, in a statement, said that he specialised in acting and drama from the institute. As a student of NSD, he directed some significant dramas like Suryamukh, Sultan Razia, Danton’s Death, Tuqlak, Ek Aur Taanagath, Mere Hokar, and Teen Ekaanth.

“You were spectacular in every drama you acted in. Honoured with Jaydev Award, Bijay Mohanty worked and acted wonderfully in several Odia films and left an impression in the world of scriptwriting for which he was also conferred with the Sahitya Akademi Award,” the statement added.

Director-in-charge, NSD, Suresh Sharma said that the institute lost one of its meritorious and talented students. “It is a loss for both India and the world cinema. At this very sad time, every member of the National School of Drama pays homage to the late actor,” he added.
Executive Chairman of the institute Arjun Dev Charan said that he was very disturbed after hearing about his demise. “I pray to God that he may now rest in peace,” he added.
