Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday approved the master plan for transformation of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Technology (VSSUT) at Burla in Odisha’s Sambalpur district.

As per the plan, the transformation of the institute will be executed in three phases with a budget of Rs 2,000 crore. After completion of the project by 2026, more than 10,000 students can take admission in 24 under-graduate departments of the VSSUT, according to a release from the chief minister’s office.

On the instruction of the chief minister, chief secretary and secretary (5T) to the CM had visited the VSSUT on August 25 to take stock of infrastructure to make it an ideal institute.

The plan entails that the VSSUT would be developed into a multi-disciplinary engineering and research university by 2030. To be made at par with IIT and NIT, it will have 7 schools including School of Engineering, Skill Development Centre, School of Medical Technology and School of Basic Science.

Those schools would have more than 14 different departments, 24 engineering programmes and 27 centres of excellence. Besides classrooms, each school will have the facility of laboratory, research centre, professors’ chambers and students’ gallery.

Each centre of excellence will have tie-up with respective industries and at least one former student will serve as a mentor there. It will also serve as a nodal centre for consultation and research unit for development of urban and rural areas.

The student intake capacity of the VSSUT will be increased from the present 2,849 to 10,864.

The chief minister directed to complete the construction of smart classrooms of the institute within 3 months and repair works of the hostels as soon as possible. He also discussed the project with vice-chancellor and professors of the VSSUT though video-conferencing during the meeting.

Chief secretary SC Mohapatra and secretary, Skill Development department Hemant Sharma were present at the event that was coordinated by secretary (5T) to chief minister VK Pandian.
