Naveen Inaugurates New Campus Of IMS & SUM Hospital At Phulnakhara

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the second campus of the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and SUM Hospital, faculty of medicine of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University (SOA), at Phulnakhara on Sunday.

The new hospital, strategically located on the NH-16 between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, will have the latest healthcare facilities and cutting-edge technology to enable patients access quality treatment including advanced cancer care. “The new hospital will have the objective to become a milestone in the state’s healthcare ecosystem,” SOA Vice-Chancellor Prof Pradipta Kumar Nanda said.

Naveen went round the different departments in the hospital after inaugurating it. Minister for Health and Family Welfare Niranjan Pujari, 5T Chairman VK Pandian, MLA Susanta Kumar Rout and Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister Suresh Kumar Mohapatra were present.

Prof Manojranjan Nayak, founder president of SOA, welcomed the chief minister. SOA vice-president Saswati Das, SOA‘s principal advisor (Health Sciences) Prof Ashok Kumar Mahapatra and Medical Superintendent Prof Pusparaj Samantasinhar were also present on the occasion.

The new teaching hospital will have 750 beds initially. The number of beds will be increased to 3,000 within two years. The onco care facilities available at Phulnakhara will include radiation oncology, nuclear medicine and sophisticated diagnostic equipment. The location of the hospital will greatly benefit patients as they will be able to access it from different parts of the state.

The Phulnakhara campus of IMS and SUM Hospital will have the departments including General Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Pediatrics, Neonatology, Critical Care Medicine, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Radio-Diagnosis, Emergency Medicine, Immuno Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Medical Oncology, Pediatric Oncology, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Pathology and Microbiology.

Eminent healthcare experts from reputed medical institutions in the country, who have been extending high quality specialist and super speciality medical care to the patients, will also serve the new hospital.

Prof Nanda said another campus of SUM Hospital was being set up at Sitalapalli in Ganjam district and it was expected to be dedicated to the people by end of January. The hospital will have 350 beds and all necessary modern healthcare infrastructure, he said.

“The three hospitals run by SOA will complement each other while striving to extend quality healthcare to the people,” he said adding treatment under the Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) would be extended to eligible patients in all the three hospitals.

Prof Arakhita Swain, Dean of the new institute and Dr Rajesh Kumar Lenka, Medical Superintendent, were also present.

The Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, faculty of medicine of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University (SOA) in Bhubaneswar, has been providing medical services for more than 18 years. The teaching hospital, where 250 students get admission into the MBBS course every year, was started in 2005. It has 167 post-graduate seats while 35 students pursue different superspeciality courses.
