Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday paid tributes to great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan on his birth anniversary.
In his official Twitter post, Naveen said, “Tributes to one of the greatest mathematicians of all time, Srinivasa Ramanujan on his birth anniversary. The extraordinary contributions of the gifted genius to the world of mathematics will continue to inspire scholars & young minds from across the world.”
The legendary mathematician was born in Erode in Tamil Nadu on this day in 1887. In 2012, the Central government had declared 22 December to be observed as National Mathematics Day.
In 1913, he joined the University of Cambridge on the invitation of Prof GH Hardy who was impressed by his 10-page letter with statements of theorems on infinite series, improper integrals, continued fractions, and number theory.
During his stay in England, Ramanujan was awarded a BSc (later renamed PhD) and made the youngest Fellow of Royal Society. He returned to India in 1919 after World War I but died of tuberculosis due to poor health on April 26, 1920.
Ramanujam had compiled more than 3,000 results on equations and identities in his life time, many of which were posthumously proven right. He is known for his contribution to analytical theory of numbers, elliptic functions, continued fractions, and infinite series.
